‘Standing in the Shadows’ is a follow on from my last painting which featured the North York Moors. In it the cottage was a small detail there to enhance the feeling of the vast space of the moors. So for this one I decided to get closer to the cottage and make it the focal point of the painting. The painting is a mix of bits from older works and unused sketches in a deliberate attempt to evoke the nostalgia prevalent in paintings of rural life by the great Victorian watercolourists of whom I have long been a fan. It’s also a mix of techniques so there are loose washes, some masking fluid, a bit of paint spattering as well as lots of fine detail. I used my usual six colours but added highlights of raw sienna to emphasise the light. Here we have it then – the classic rural idyll with wife and baby enjoying the cool evening shadows as they wait for the return of the hard working husband
