Driving in and around the Yorkshire Wolds I noticed one startling change from as little as twenty years ago the absence of poppies. At one time poppies grew abundantly among many crops brightening up the golds and green with their distinctive colour. Sadly modern agriculture has largely removed these beautiful flowers in the name of efficiency and greater productivity. Apart from their beauty Im sure things tasted better when made from cereal containing natural poppy seeds. However all is not completely lost. There are still some farms that allow this wonderful flower to flourish. When I came across this field I was overjoyed and have even passed the location on to other artist friends. Poppies have a unique place in our hearts due to their long association with remembrance Sunday so I always get a feeling of poignancy when I paint them. Let us then say a big thank you to all those farmers who are preserving this wonderful part of our national heritage and allowing poppies to freely bloom long may it continue.
