I used an old sketch as the basis for this painting. Uncluttered by details I was able to use my memories of this fascinating place to capture the spirit of Skipwith Common. It is the largest expanse of heathland bog left in the North of England. This means it has a unique flora and fauna and is an utter joy for any painter to wander and be inspired. This painting is about the edge of winter. I was trying to capture the transition as the ice slowly melts giving the promise of warmer times to come as we welcome spring.
