Description
My dear reader, you may not be aware that the highest mountains in the world are in Yorkshire. They have just worn down a bit. We also have the largest lakes in the world even if they have dried out a little. Though these facts are indisputable I must admit to being very impressed on my first visit to the Lake District. This rare foray away from God’s own county was brought about by a celebration of our twenty fourth wedding anniversary. Despite my trepidation Merice dragged me away to a small hotel in Keswick for a long weekend. To be fair the landscape is stunning and like many artists before me I soon fell under its spell. With towering mountains overlooking sparkling lakes, what more does a painter need? Even though our main reason for the visit was to celebrate our special occasion I still managed to do several sketches. I did several paintings on our return home and this is the one I was most pleased with. The area is really very colourful but this is my favourite because of the muted tones. I think that colour can sometimes be a distraction so the very limited palette and muted tones I used captured the essential drama of the location and the soft light that imbued it. That’s enough arty talk for now let’s return to the practicalities. For one thing Cumberland sausage makes a very adequate substitute for the good old Yorkshire banger. The people we met were warm and friendly and there is no denying that the scenery is spectacular. Is it worth a visit to see for yourself? Undoubtedly, in fact we returned the following year to celebrate our 25th but that’s another tale to tell.
