I have commissioned myself to do a couple of paintings to hang in our new kitchen when it is finished. There are no stipulations apart from one – they must be portrait.
As a landscape painter I have not really considered interiors as a subject before, but as I am basing the paintings on a food and drink theme, I decided to have a go at one. The strong contrasts between lights and darks of the interior were a fascinating and enjoyable challenge. I painted it with my large Chinese brushes using just four colours and am pleased with how it has turned out.
However, my old friend, Margaret Hockney, told me many years ago that if you manage something once, it could be a lucky accident. You need to do it a few times with similar results before claiming you have mastered it. It’s always a good idea to follow Margaret’s advice so I suppose I will be painting some more ‘interiors’ next week!
