Description
Troutsdale is probably my favourite Dale of all. Situated on the southern tip of the North York National Park (just about – give or take a mile or two!) it has all the attributes of its more famous cousins but on a smaller scale. It has a steep drop down into the dale where you follow a winding single track road through some delightful scenery. Apart from the occasional farmhouse, the only building is a disused Methodist Chapel which is now in a crumbling but romantic stage. There is a small parking area beside a bridge over the River Derwent which is a great place for a ‘spot of tiffin’. For my non- English readers (and I hope there are a few) ‘tiffin’ is an Indian English word for a type of meal. It refers to a light tea-time meal at about 3pm, or a light breakfast consisting of typical tea-time foods.
This quaint word perfectly fits the spirit of the dale – a quiet, peaceful place of bygone days. I have painted it many times and when we drove through it the other day, I resolved to revisit Troutsdale in watercolours.
I worked this from an old sketch using just three colours. I hope I have captured the serenity of the place and made you think you might have a look yourself. If you do, you will not be disappointed.
