Description
I was given permission to use a sketch by the great JMW Turner as the basis of my watercolour. It was painted in the 1780s on his first trip up north. In typical Turner fashion the scene does not actually exist from this viewpoint. He painted the bridge and the boats from the river and then added the Minster and St Mary's Church while stood on the bridge and then fused the two together. I deliberately set the scene at night by moonlight so I didn't have to compete with the glittering colours used by the great man in his work.

This is beautiful! I love the shades of blue and the atmosphere you painted.
Glenn Marshall replied:
Thanks Lauren. A lot of this scene is still recognisable today but the bridge collapsed shortly after Turner's visit though a new one was built fairly quickly.
