This painting originally hung in a Filey Bank for many years until the bank’s demise when it was returned to me. Normally I am not particularly pleased when a painting is returned but this case was a bit different and I was happy to see it. It is a perfect example of what Merice called a “Rainbow Painting”. This is simply letting colours mix together wet on wet to produce these lovely effects. Again this is one of the joys of watercolour – it does all the best bits by itself! I also used a bit of masking fluid and a sprinkle of salt. Using salt can produce some interesting textures and I am often asked “When is the right time to apply it?” The reply is “When it works “because there is no magic answer. Too early and it absorbs too much paint but too late and it has little or no effect. It’s just a case of trial and error but when it works the result can be a very natural look as in this fortuitous case. This painting fits in very well with the theme of the exhibition and I am very happy...
