Artist's Description

July is the month for wild roses. They adorn the hedgerows of the Wolds with their beauty and their scent. These are Dog Roses and are supported by hawthorn hedges here on the Wykeham Road. They are called dog roses after the Old English usage of the word which simply meant common. The hawthorn used to have an Old English name too quick thorn. Quick used to mean living and became attached to the hawthorn when it began to be used as boundaries instead of (dead) stone walls.
