Artist's Description

For a painter these days, interpretation has become more important than observation. With the almost universal advent of mobile phone technology, anyone can take a photo and every detail is captured in its entirety. So, I must take a different approach to my work.
Many years ago, artists could concentrate on the details and their work became an important record of how things were. They also provided a visual reference for the vast majority of people at the time. A good example is the set of paintings that J.M.W. Turner did on his travels to Venice. His paintings influenced the way most people thought about Venice and how it looked. As hardly any of them would ever get the chance to visit Venice themselves it was immaterial that Turner’s scenes never actually existed. Turner was first and foremost an artist and he manipulated the real locations to make his paintings. However, he did get the details right and, of course, was a master at capturing the light.
