Description
This painting was inspired by a photograph taken by my wife Merice. Set in the Yorkshire Dales, I thought it was ideal for the ‘Farquharson’ treatment. What is that I hear you ask? You might never have heard the name Joseph Farquharson, but I dare say you will have seen one of his paintings at some time. Born in 1846, Farquharson was a son of a Scottish Laird. He was well down the list of heirs, so he was able to pursue his passion for art. However, after a series of unfortunate events, he ended up as Laird of his vast family estate. Now he really could indulge in his art. He had a mobile studio constructed. It was horse drawn and he would go out painting on his land. He liked to paint sheep in the snow, but the sheep had a penchant for wandering off. Not a problem to a wealthy laird. He commissioned a series of life size sculptures of sheep in different poses. Problem solved! Picture the scene. The Laird would be cocooned in his warm studio with butler on hand to supply a tot or two of single malt while his servants moved the wooden sheep to the desired locations. His paintings of golden light on a snowy scene were much admired down south who loved his romantic depictions of life in the highlands. He became famous and his paintings are still featured to this day in prints, coasters etc. etc. I love his work and though purists might argue he was a bit of a cheat, I think he was a pretty cool guy.
