Commissions can be a minefield especially when you are relatively new to the business. However by the time I was commissioned to paint this particular scene at the start of �Thieves Highway� which runs up Sutton Bank I had learned a few lessons. My client had been struck by the beauty of the Rosebay Willow Herbs which adorned the pathway and wanted me to capture it for her. We duly visited the scene and while she and Merice walked up the steep trail towards the white horse I made a few sketches. The next part of this hard working (!) day was being treated to the most expensive steak pie I have ever had in the luxurious surroundings of the Byland Inn. I did two paintings and let the client choose which one she preferred. This was not her choice so I put it away in a bag and forgot about it. Strange because when I found it again very recently I realised it was a nice painting in its own right and I am happy to include it in the �Three Journeys� Exhibition. Thi...
