I love this time of year. The hedgerows are bursting with life and a special feature is the May blossom. This painting is on Woldgate just after the Burton Agnes Road where you turn off down to Kilham.
Hawthorn was once known as ‘quickthorn’. Back in the days when hawthorn first started to be used as fencing it was known as ‘quick’ in the old English sense of being alive, as opposed to the ‘dead’ wood or stone fencing.
Whatever you want to call it, you can’t deny that it makes a glorious spectacle for a few weeks.
