One good thing to come out of this ‘lockdown’ is that I have plenty of time to paint. If we can’t get out, I can at least bring the countryside to you, so look out for big skies and lots of space. Where better to start than the glorious North York Moors National Park. There, you can wander around in peace and solitude meeting only the occasional sheep while listening to the call of the curlews. You will certainly come across many waymarkers dotted on the moors. They were the motorway signs of their day, designed especially to direct wool laden packhorses from Byland Abbey, Fountains Abbey and Rievaulx Abbey to the coast for export to Europe. Probably the most famous is the prominent ‘Fat Betty’. When you visit, don’t forget to leave a few coins behind to assist weary travellers who come after you. Good luck will surely follow if you adhere to this ancient tradition.
