Description
There is something fascinating about bridges whatever the size or shape. Perhaps it is because their purpose is to join separate pieces together.
This is a pack horse bridge. Pack horse bridges are dotted all around Yorkshire and hark back to the days when the whole wealth of the nation was dependent on the wool trade. Yorkshire had three powerhouse centres of this lucrative business – Rievaulx Abbey, Fountains Abbey and Byland Abbey. These great abbeys used these bridges to get their wool to the ports. So a reminder of our past and a reminder that it is always better to build bridges than walls.
