Artist's Description

I painted this from an old black and white photo taken in 1903 which shows Hansom Cabs in Suffolk Street, London. I find the easiest way to interpret these old photos for a painting is to make a moonlit scene or ‘nocturne’ out of them. This eliminates any worries about original colours so I can concentrate on the tones to emphasise the contrast between lights and darks. Although greatly simplified, I hope I have captured the essence of the scene. I certainly enjoyed painting it.
